Orthodontics

What is Orthodontics?

There are so many benefits to having straight, well aligned teeth. Not only does it improve your smile (and your self confidence) but teeth are easier to clean and floss also make for better oral hygiene.

We use Invisalign™ or ClearCorrect™ for orthodontic movement. Clear aligner technique uses a series of retainers (computer generated or lab constructed) that are worn sequentially until the desired correction is achieved. Though this technique can move teeth there are limitations on certain types of movement with this appliance.
Invisalign and ClearCorrect are two dental labs that fabricate clear aligner appliances for orthodontic movement. Aligner orthodontics uses the clear retainer type devices to produce the movement traditionally done with brackets and wires. Where the aligners cannot do everything the traditional brackets and wires can do, for many it is a viable option for orthodontic treatment. Clear aligners are most effective for mild to moderate crowding, and treatment for relapse of prior orthodontic treatment.

Clear aligner orthodontics starts an any other orthodontic treatment. The process begins with a comprehensive examination and orthodontic records. Besides the usual impressions taken of the teeth to make the plaster models, a set of highly accurate impressions are also taken. The accurate impressions are needed to allow a precise fit of the clear aligners.

The records, x-rays, photos and the accurate impressions are submitted to the lab. The impressions of the teeth are reproduced digitally by the lab and the tooth movement is planned out by the lab and the dentist. The aligners are fabricated so that the movements occur incrementally. That is, each tray will move the teeth slightly towards their final aligned destination.

After the trays have been fabricated, you will see the doctor on a regular appointment schedule to check the progress and provide you with the next set of aligners. The aligners are usually worn for about 2 weeks, and then the next set is worn to continue the tooth movement process.

Compliance with proper wear and care of the clear aligners is essential for a good outcome. If the aligners are not worn, the teeth will not move. In fact, if they are not worn while in the midst of treatment, relapse can occur, and the teeth may shift to a point where the aligners will no longer fit. This is a serious problem that may necessitate re-impression and starting the treatment again from that point.

Patients that otherwise would never have considered braces in the past now have another potential option for treatment.
